A young Maybury family wanted to turn their developer-grade back garden into a usable, beautiful outdoor room — somewhere to entertain, somewhere for the children to play on real grass, and a shaded sun pocket under a pergola for the evenings.

Patchy Lawn → Bulletin Ivory Porcelain & Pergola
The original developer lawn was thin and uneven on heavy clay. We rebuilt the levels, laid full Bulletin Ivory porcelain and added a cedar pergola sun pocket.
Empty New-Build Garden → Curved Grass Island
A blank rectangle of grass became a sculpted real-lawn island, framed by hand-cut granite edging and large-format porcelain.
Tired Grey Slabs → Outdoor Living Space
We lifted the developer slabs, corrected drainage falls and introduced a raised timber planter, stepping stones and a calm porcelain terrace.
Rough Side Path → Granite Stepping Stones
The cracked side path was replaced with bespoke hand-cut granite stepping stones set into a feature gravel band — practical and quiet underfoot.

Bulletin Ivory Porcelain
20mm outdoor porcelain in a warm ivory-travertine tone. R11 anti-slip, frost-proof, <0.5% water absorption — laid on a full mortar bed over MOT Type 1 with priming slurry.
Hand-Cut Granite Edging
Each granite setts edge piece was hand-cut on site to trace the curve of the lawn — a detail that machine-cut concrete edging simply cannot reproduce.
Granite Stepping Stones
Bespoke stepping stones set into a gravel band beside the raised planter — a quiet, permeable route from patio to back gate.
Real Lawn
Premium turf laid over a screened topsoil bed with proper falls for drainage. Real grass keeps the garden cool and soft underfoot for the children.
Cedar Pergola
Pressure-treated cedar pergola anchored on galvanised post shoes, positioned in the garden's sun pocket and built to take string lights and climbing plants.
Venetian-Style Fencing
Horizontal slatted timber screens used as a feature backdrop to the pergola, paired with full-height closeboard fencing for privacy and shelter.

Design Rationale
Maybury sits on the western edge of Edinburgh, where new-build estates roll up against open ground and the wind funnels in from the Forth. That climate shaped almost every decision in this garden. The Bulletin Ivory porcelain was chosen because it reads as warm natural stone in low Scottish light, but behaves like engineered ceramic when it freezes — no greening, no spalling, no annual sealing.
The curved lawn is the heart of the layout. Rather than fight the narrow plot with a rectangular lawn, we drew a soft island and traced it in hand-cut granite. The eye is pulled past the patio toward the pergola in the back corner, which sits exactly where the garden catches the last of the evening sun.
Drainage was rebuilt from the sub-base up. The new-build clay below was breaking up the developer slabs, so we re-graded falls toward the existing channel drain and threaded the patio around the manhole rather than over it, keeping access easy for the future.
The Venetian-style slatted screens are doing two jobs — softening the closeboard boundary and giving the pergola a backdrop that catches the shadow patterns of the cross-rafters. Small detail, big atmosphere.
