Our Alloa clients had a small garden but wanted to create a usable outdoor living space for dining and entertaining. The existing garden was predominantly lawn with limited hard landscaping, making it difficult to use during wet weather — a common issue in Scotland.
They specifically wanted a low-maintenance solution that would require minimal upkeep while providing year-round functionality. The brief included a covered area for shade and weather protection, plus opportunities for planting to maintain greenery. The challenge was maximizing the usable space without overwhelming the compact garden.

We began by excavating the decking area and installing concrete pad foundations for the supporting posts. Unlike basic decking installations, we use engineered foundations that prevent movement and ensure structural integrity for decades.
A weed-suppressing membrane was laid across the entire base area, topped with decorative gravel to prevent weed growth and improve drainage beneath the deck. This detail work ensures the longevity of the installation and reduces future maintenance requirements.
Decking, Pergola, and Finishing Details
Composite Decking: We installed premium composite decking boards that combine the aesthetics of natural wood with the durability of modern materials. These boards are resistant to fading, staining, warping, and rot. They require no annual treatment — just occasional cleaning with soapy water.
Pergola Structure: The bespoke pergola was constructed using pressure-treated timber with professional mortise and tenon joinery for maximum strength. The pergola provides partial shade and creates an architectural focal point while supporting climbing plants for future greenery.
