How deep should a driveway sub-base be?

A domestic driveway sub-base should typically be 150mm of compacted MOT Type 1 hardcore for cars, and deeper for heavier vehicles or soft ground. 1. Skimping on the sub-base

The sub-base is the foundation of the entire driveway, yet it is the first thing cut to save money. Too thin a layer of hardcore, or poor compaction, leads to sinking and rutting within months. A domestic driveway needs around 150mm of well-compacted MOT Type 1, and more on soft ground or for heavier vehicles.

2. Ignoring drainage

Scotland's rainfall is relentless, and a driveway with no drainage becomes a pond. Worse, under SUDS rules surface water must not run onto the public road. We design in channel drains, soakaways and permeable surfaces so water is managed properly — protecting the driveway and keeping it compliant.

3. Weak or missing edge restraints

Block paving and resin need a solid edge to hold them in place. Without proper haunched edge restraints, the surface spreads, gaps open up and the whole driveway loosens over time. Strong edging is cheap insurance against premature failure.

4. Laying over the old surface

Tempting as it is, laying a new surface straight over a cracked old one simply transfers the existing faults upward. Old, failing surfaces need to be removed and the ground reinstated properly. Anything less is a short-term fix that costs more to correct later.

5. No falls to shed water

A driveway must be laid with subtle falls so water runs to the drains rather than sitting in puddles or draining toward the house. Getting the levels right is a skilled part of the job and one of the first things to suffer when a job is rushed.
